what is diverticulitis?

Welcome to another Tuesday edition of Health Tips on Tuesday. August is Colon Health Awareness Month and I have been discussing Diverticulosis. Today, I am going to talk about Diverticulitis. It is a sister disease to Diverticulosis. You can read the other posts on this topic in the archives.

Diverticulitis is very common especially as we age. You have to have Diverticulosis to have Diverticulitis. Why? Because Diverticulitis is inflammation, and or infection, of the Diverticulum that are present in Diverticulosis. Remember that diverticulum are pouches that form usually in the lower colon and can not only become infected but also can blow, or perforate causing much larger issues.

There are 3 videos below that explain Diverticulitis and have images to help you visualize what I mean. It may be disturbing to some people, so watch wisely. The 3rd video is in Spanish, to explain it to any Spanish readers that may visit this blog. I only know a little Spanish, so I can not verify what he is saying. I tried to find it in Sign Language as well, but I could not locate any, except for one with signs for common symptoms. So, I will share that for any medical people so you can have at least some basic signs to communicate with hearing impaired patients.

Low calorie food #4: sweet peaches!

Hello, and welcome to Friday! I have had an especially stressful week, and I am glad it is almost over. It is my weekend to work, so I may not add any new content until Monday. I have been performing Reiki on myself, for stress relief, and it is fabulous. You may see affiliate links in this post.

At the end of last Summer we planted a peach tree. It was kind of already big in my opinion, but I had no idea if it would produce fruit, especially the first season after planting. To my surprise it did produce fruit and they are so sweet and juicy. They are small, but that is OK too. This peach tree really didn’t need much care at all. I will have to prune it at the end of the season, and I don’t think they produce fruit twice, so that should be soon. I still have a bunch on the tree that are not ripe enough yet. If the rest all come ripe at the same time, I can freeze them for use later in the year. There are only about 20 peaches in total left on the tree.

The image below is mine of the actual peaches I have picked so far. You can watch the video below to learn more about the Health benefits of peaches. You might be surprised. Some people don’t like the fuzzy skin, but honestly when they are very ripe you don’t even notice it. Peaches are a good source of Vitamin A. According to my Basket pricing app 1 pound of peaches in my area are 1.49-2.99. They are in season now, so it is the best time to enjoy them!

day 8: Just a Quickie!

Hello, and Happy Wednesday! Today is one of those crazy kind of days. I am sure you have had them. I am trying to get everything done before I head to my Ortho appt, and then grocery shop after. It will be a late night getting home, and I honestly do not know what I will eat for dinner. It will probably be a salad, or chicken sandwich. A couple of updates from yesterday’s post. I needed more calories, and I found in my cupboard the Save A Lot brand of Strawberry Fig Newtons. I love these! I think I got them at Save A Lot, lol. I had three, and they added about 200 calories to my day. They also fit my fat requirements. My husband liked the low fat mac n cheese, but my daughter did not. This zero point food/very low fat food challenge will end next Tuesday. I will then concentrate on Brain Health.

I will not add all the nutrition info today, because I simply don’t have time. I am at a 2 pound weight loss for the 8 days so far.

Breakfast: 2 slices of Thomas Cinnamon bread with just about a tsp of my whipped butter between the two slices, and coffee of course. Each slice of bread has 1.5 grams of total fat.

Lunch: I am having a one cup serving of the low fat mac n cheese, leftover from last night, to hold me over to dinner. I have some green beans, and sweet corn mixed in with a 1/2 tbsp of whipped butter for heating. I ran out of milk. I am also having 10-15 green grapes.

Dinner: Don’t have a clue yet, lol. It will be late.

I just added my new Distance Reiki Wellness Plan. You can view it here.

I just created, just for my Mailchimp subscribers, a 1 mile in 15 minute walking template. Sign up for my mailing list to get yours.

day 4 Zero Points/Very Low fat food challenge!

If you read yesterday’s post then you know that I had to take a 24 hour break from the challenge to assess why I was bloated, gassy, and had much abdominal pain. I suspected it was the sugar substitutes and possible phosphorus additives in the low fat, and or sugar free items I had been eating. I suspect I am right, because after 24 hours I feel back to normal and ready to go, minus those food items. If you need to check back to day one to see my rules setup, please click here. I will add one day to the challenge to make it a full 2 weeks due to the day off. You may see affiliate links in this post.

Today, my son and his wife will be coming for dinner, so we are having a nice meal. Below you will see what I have eaten, and will eat for today.

Breakfast: Just coffee

Lunch: 1 medium banana. 1 cup cooked pasta salad with cucumbers, part skim mozzarella cheese .5 ounce, bell pepper, and 2 tbsp Raspberry Vinaigrette. I also had 15 Snyder’s Pretzel nuggets.

Dinner I will have: Extra lean pork tenderloin 3 oz with 2 tbsp of the bbq sauce shown below. Homemade coleslaw made with low fat Hellman’s mayonnaise. I will have 1/2 cup serving of that. 1 cup chopped watermelon, and 1 ear corn on the cob. I cut it off the cob and use 1 tbsp of Land O Lakes Whipped Butter.

day 5: elderly, pets, and emergency numbers

Today, is the last day of Hurricane Preparedness Week, here on Health Buddy Melissa. Tomorrow will start my Zero Points Food Challenge that will run for two weeks. It is the June Health Challenge. Be sure and come back tomorrow to read the particulars, and maybe even join in the fun! You can also check out my post from Saturday where I discussed the trial run of the challenge.

Below you will find two videos on Hurricane Prep for the elderly and pets. The elderly are very vulnerable in a storm, especially since they may not want to leave their home, and may not be adequately prepared. You can not make people be prepared, but hopefully with encouragement they will. Pets are vulnerable for obvious reasons. We have domesticated them, and they are helpless. In the video she has bought booties for her dog. I don’t think that would be a priority for me, but I definitely would have some kind of first aid cream and maybe Vaseline for their paws if needed. My dog went nuts when she squeaked the toy, lol.

This website has a ton of information about numbers, websites, and even apps that you will want to have on handy during Hurricane Season. I will definitely be looking at these apps, and keeping the numbers. The first part of the article is local info for that county, so scroll down to get all of the other goodies.

Updated Disclaimer: 6/04/2021

Health Buddy Melissa is a Sole Proprietor website owned by me. I pay my taxes as an Independent Contractor.  This updated disclaimer date 6/04/2021 replaces the outdated disclaimer.  Please read and understand it before requesting coaching services from Health Buddy Melissa.

1-  Health Buddy Melissa  is not meant to be medical advice, or to replace seeing a doctor, or other health practitioner.  Anyone who does so, is doing so at their own risk, not mine.  I will share opinions, or engage in topics and conversations of information that can be found in publications, on the internet, and from my own personal experience.   You may see affiliate links on this blog.  I only use reputable companies to affiliate for when and if I choose to do so.  As a Holistic Health Coach I can help you with many goals such as:  learning about a chronic illness, follow a diet set by your doctor, learn about menu planning and diets to lose weight or build muscle, learn about kidney disease and ways to help manage it, communicate better with your doctor or anyone, time management, deal with difficult people and so many more. I am in the process of targeting my plans to be more specific rather than so broad. You will see wellness replacing health.

2-  Privacy-  Privacy is very important to me.   I will never sell your information, or let others have access to it.  All client info is deleted from my private email account within 7 days of our contract together ending.  If you decide to work with me after that time, a whole new account will be made.  No one has access to my private email account but me.  However, you always have to be aware that things can get hacked.  It is in the news all the time.  I have never been hacked, but a release will need to be signed absolving me of responsibility should it be hacked.  I have purchased a business email through Google Suite.  They assure me it is private, encrypted and safe.

3-  I am a Licensed Practical Nurse, for 34 years, and that means I have been coaching people for many years already.  I am 51 years old, you do the Math.  I am a  Certified Holistic Health Coach.  I also have certificates in Aromatherapy, Reiki level 2 Practitioner, Herbalism, Mindfulness Practitioner, and Guided Imagery.  I also took a free course on Sports Medicine, but no certificate was supplied. I have a second Health Coach certificate that taught me about exercise and plans. But, I am not a personal trainer. I have taken many Nutrition courses, but I am not a Nutritionist.  I can not prescribe a diet to you legally, but I can help you learn how to eat properly to lose weight and maintain good health.  If you have a prescribed diet from a doctor I can help you to understand and modify your life to follow that plan.

4-  As your Health Coach it is my job to educate you, motivate you, and support you to reach your health goals.  I will not provide nutrition advice, or medical advice.  It is actually illegal in many states to provide Nutrition advice.  Some states it is allowed.  That will be discussed at the Meet and Greet.  I will not make meal plans targeted to certain nutrition requirements, but I will create general meal plans, unless allowed in your state.  I will, however, teach you to do so yourself.  There is much more to health than just diet, nutrition, and fitness.  I can work with you on any goal you may have.  See some examples below.  I can not help you with serious Mental Health Issues.  I am not qualified to do so, and feel it can be incredibly dangerous.  If you just need someone to listen to you, I do have a program for that, but I will not give opinions, or advice, and if I feel you are suicidal I will recommend the hotline to you.

5-  If you live outside the USA, I can still work with you.  You must speak, write and understand English, and all times of meetings will be Eastern Time Zone.  It will be your responsibility to know what that means, and when the meeting time will be. All payments will have to be made via Paypal in US dollars only.  It is your responsibility to follow your country’s laws for dealing with Health Coaches in other countries.  A disclaimer will be required if you do not live in the USA.

6-  If you need a young, skinny, hot Health Coach, then I am not the Health Coach for you.  However, if you want someone who will care about you, and work hard for you, then I might be the Coach you need.  I will not promise big results.  The results will depend on how much effort you put into meeting the goals you will set.  Health Coaching is about you, not me.  It is not a personal relationship where I tell you all about my life.  It is a professional relationship aimed at steering you towards meeting goals you want met.  If at any time I feel the relationship is no longer professional services will be ceased.
